Bandpass Tunable Filter

The SIMTRUM BPTF-BM and BPTF-BE series of Short-pass/Long-pass Tunable Filters are built based on a platform of free-space optical Fourier transformation combined with diffraction grating to implement passband tuning.

 

The unique optical design enables spatial selection of either the short-wavelength or long-wavelength components of the input spectrum and provides a flat transmission response within the passband. Wavelength tuning is actuated by either a precise micrometer driver or a micro stepper motor. For the electric version, the tuning mechanism can be connected to a PC via a USB interface. The actuation is monitored by a built-in encoder and dynamically controlled in a closed-loop.

 

The optical design offers a selection of various bandwidths and tuning ranges, accompanied by low insertion loss and low polarization-dependent loss (PDL). The precise tuning mechanism ensures high wavelength resolution and excellent wavelength repeatability. Both manual (BPTF-BM) and electric (BPTF-BE) versions are available, covering various communication bands such as X-, O-, S-, C-, and L-bands.

1,Light enters through the "Fiber Optic Input Collimator" and ultimately exits from the "Fiber Optic Output Collimator".

2,Collimator: Its function is to convert the divergent light emitted from the optical fiber into collimated light (parallel beams), and simultaneously to efficiently couple collimated light from free space back into the optical fiber.

3,Grating: The grating causes diffraction and interference. According to the diffraction equation, light of different wavelengths is diffracted at different angles.

4,Fourier Transform Lens: It is used to focus the light dispersed by the grating and perform a Fourier transform. This focuses light of different wavelengths onto distinct spatial positions, converting angular differences into spatial displacement.

5,Movable Blocker: By precisely moving this blocker (via a manual micrometer or a motorized stepper motor), the cutoff point of the transmitted spectrum can be accurately selected. This achieves the effect of allowing either long-wavelength or short-wavelength components to pass, thus realizing passband wavelength tuning.

6,Inverse Fourier Transform Lens: It reconverts the spatially distributed waves, which have undergone the Fourier transform, back into an angular distribution.

7,Grating: It compensates for the angular deviation introduced by the first grating, eliminates residual dispersion, and ensures the output beam is correctly aligned into the optical fiber.

  1. Operating Principle and TuningMechanism

Users can easily control the filter's wavelength tuning using any serial communication software on a PC (e.g., HyperTerminal or Tera Term).

The command set is straightforward, allowing users to easily drive the filter to find its home position, tune to the desired center wavelength of the transmission band, or move to any specified position within its range.
